Landlord’s Fluffy Friends or Foes
Last year a survey was conducted by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities. Within this survey, it was asked to landlords based on a list of different characteristics of tenants, to which they were not willing to rent.
It was found that 45% of Landlords would not allow tenants to have pets.
Updated in August 2022, The government has set out their plans to fundamentally reform the private rented sector and level up housing quality in this country. As a part of the A Fairer Private Rented Sector Policy Paper, it’s stated that they “will legislate to ensure landlords do not unreasonably withhold consent when a tenant requests to have a pet in their home, with the tenant able to challenge a decision”. This comes in partnership with proposed changes to the Tenant Fees Act of 2019.
